As winter temperatures set in, many are already returning to the curse of wiping their bedroom windows every morning, as the water droplets that collect from condensation overnight threaten to bring mold and damp to every warm corner of your home.
While some are brave enough to leave their windows open overnight to prevent this, others are turning to social media for tips and tricks to banish this condensation in the coming months.
However, a viral hack on TikTok could be more dangerous than the British realize.
The tip recommends applying dish soap to the windows to prevent condensation from accumulating on the glass.
Adeel Ul-Haq, a bedroom expert from Bunkbeds.nlwarned that while this hack technically works, the results are not what they seem.
The water that doesn’t stick to the windows doesn’t just disappear, it sticks to the next available surface, probably your walls, ceilings and window frames.
This can promote the growth and spread of moisture or even mold, which can impact your health and your wallet. The expert dismissed the hack as “useless” and even “bordering on stupid.”
He further explained: “While no one wants mold in their home, it is much easier to wipe the mold from your PVC window frames than to get rid of it if the mold gets into your frames or walls. It is much more expensive to remove it to repair.”
He warned that dishwashing liquid could also damage the seals on your windows, allowing more moisture to enter and possibly causing mold to form between the panes, leading to even more expensive repairs.
Instead, Adeel suggested some other methods to eliminate condensation: “Your first option is to use a window vacuum or squeegee to remove excess moisture every day, or the second option is to use a dehumidifier.
“Dehumidifiers can be expensive, but using one can save you some money on your heating bills because removing moisture from your home will help your home heat up faster.”
